Country auberge owned and run by the Husser family at the top of the Route des Vins, formerly a staging post on the Saverne-Strasbourg road. Dine in the cosy, wood-panelled dining room in winter, or out in the cobbled courtyard in summer. Fresh fish delivered overnight from Brittany, intriguing twists on Alsace classics (choucroute served with tiny, crusty pieces of sucking pig and smoked foie gras) and proper puddings. Also a decent three-star hotel – rack rates are quite high, but there are some good deals combining room with dinner.

Useful information: Menus: €39 (weekday lunch) - €79. Restaurant closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Rooms: €187-€297 including breakfast.
