Frequent, lively events are scheduled in the vineyard villages throughout the summer with wine, oompa-pa music and dancing (a favourite pastime in Alsace) – some of the most interesting are listed below, but visit www.alsace-du-vin.com or www.vinsalsace.com for dates and venues.
Many independent vignerons (including Anne-Marie Schmitt in Bergbieten) celebrate this event every year on Whit Monday. Anyone can join the party – bring your own picnic; trestle tables, benches, shade (or shelter) and copious wine are provided, plus visits to the caves and explanations of the house winemaking style. Piano accordions and dancing not unknown.
Useful information: Visit www.alsace-du-vin.com and look under ‘Nos Rendezvous’ for dates and details.
On 14/15 August each year Marlenheim re-enacts the marriage of Fritz Kobus, confirmed bachelor of Erckmann Chatrian’s 19th century novel L’Ami Fritz, to the lovely Suzel. Traditional costumes, street parade with horse-drawn carts and plenty of Rouge de Marlenheim.
