Local chef Jean-Yves Schillinger left Colmar after his father died tragically in a fire in the family restaurant and spent seven years working in New York. A few years ago he returned and with help from a well-heeled local businessman opened here in a steeply roofed, rejuvenated 17th century house in Little Venice. The cooking, described as cuisine du monde (world cuisine) is a mostly successful fusion of Spanish, Italian, Japanese and French ingredients and techniques (e.g. crab with a Pacojet foam and slightly weird crème de tacos, hamburger anti-crise with foie gras, truffled celery salad and potato ‘churros’). Riverside terrace for summer dining. A good selection of top wines by the glass.

Useful information: Menus at €32 (weekday lunch). €55 and €72. Closed all day Sundays and Monday lunchtimes. Less pricey, equally lively, are JY’ Sushi Bar on the nearby Place de l’Ancienne Douane and Côté Cour-Côté Four, a modern 250-seat brasserie-boulangerie on Rue des Serruriers (site of the late lamented Helmstetter bakery).
