Philippe Kubler, after training with consultant winemaker Denis Dubourdieu during his Masters in Oeonology at Bordeaux University and a 6-month stint at Cloudy Bay in 2002, took over winemaking at the family domaine in 2003 – he’s the 13th generation of Kublers to make wine in Soultzmatt. They own 9ha of vines in and around the village, including a good holding in Grand Cru Zinnkoepfle, where they grow fine Gewurz, Sylvaner and Pinot Gris. Kintet is their lively, entry-level wine, a blend of Pinots Blanc and Noir plus Sylvaner, Gewurz and Riesling. Kubler’s Sylvaner Z 2007, from grapes grown in Zinnkoepfle, has been hailed as ‘probably the most beautiful Sylvaner produced in Alsace in 2007’ (Thierry Meyer on oenoalsace.com).
Useful information: Philippe’s English is excellent. Call to make an appointment for a tasting (Mon-Sat, 09.30-12.30 and 14.00-18.30).
