Ginestet is one of Bordeaux’s biggest négociant houses, and its director Christian Delpeuch was the president of the Bordeaux Wine Council until early 2006. It has been offering tours since 2000, and has them down to a fine art. This is one of the few wine merchants where you can get an overview of the whole process of the Bordeaux market place, making it an essential stop for the novice. Ginestet both buys in and stores wine produced and bottled elsewhere, and makes its own branded blends in huge vats on site. A highly kitsch, but informative video starts the tour. There is also a shop selling wine and accessories, including perfumes based around Bordeaux grape varieties.

Useful information: Free visit, €3 for groups (up to 25 people). Monday to Friday year round. Reservation only, call 24 hours ahead if possible. Tours in French, English and Spanish.
