If any château makes the most of the Médoc proverb that ‘only the vines overlooking the water are capable of producing great wines’ it’s this one. The vineyards practically touch the river bank, and it’s only a ten minute walk from the château building down to the Garonne. This visit really signals that the northern Médoc is getting into full swing, and you’ll instantly know why I recommend a visit here: the classical lines of the château are quite unfairly beautiful and there are extensive gardens surrounding it (you even have the name spelt out in a floral tribute as you wander up the drive, something that is also done at Château Pape Clement, but not too many others). The estate also has its own farm, and raises its own cattle. Music concerts are often held here through the summer months.
