To overcome the rather long distance from Bordeaux, owners of Loudenne, the Lafragettes seem to have gone all out to make your trip here worthwhile. Besides the beautiful château itself, there are walks and picnics in the grounds or on the terrace, some lovely rooms to stay in and a wine museum. The château has 132ha of grounds, with 48ha of vines, and is the proud owner of its own private jetty, one of the very few remaining in the Gironde. They hope to develop boat trips in the near future, but for now you can take bicycles, or walk along the riverbank. Particularly lovely is the old chapel, transformed into a library. There are also some very attractive rooms overlooking the Estuary. Owner Florence Lafragette is part of les Médocaines, a group of women winemakers who offer practical workshops in the vineyard, from harvesting to blending (www.lesmedocaines.com).
Useful information: For individuals, free tour and tasting (of Château Loudenne and second wine, Les Rives de Loudenne). More in depth tasting workshops can be arranged. Rooms from €140.
