Château Sociando Mallet

Address: SCEA Jean Gautreau, 33180 Saint Seurin-de-Cadourne
Tel: 05 56 73 38 80  Fax: 05 56 73 38 88
Geo-coordinates:  Latitude: 45:17:8N (45.28568)    Longitude: -0:47:24W (-0.78997)

This château is accorded almost mythical status in the Bordeaux folklore – owner Jean Gautreau has perfected his Gallic shrug at the laurels of fame, and (rather presciently as it turned out) didn’t even bother entering his château into the 2003 Cru Bourgeois re-classification, despite being assured of an ‘Exceptionnel’ status. Perhaps appropriate for such a non-conformist wine, the château is physically located on the further northern fringes of the region, right up in the tiny hamlet of Saint Seurin de Cadourne, but you can immediately sense that the terroir is going to be favourable – the entire vineyard is elevated over a gravelly outcrop that sweeps down towards the estuary. While touring the cellars, look out for new oak, no filtering or fining, and a relatively high temperature maceration.

Useful information: Free tour and tasting, Monday to Thursday 09.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.30. Fridays 09.00-11.00. By appointment. Tours in English and French; groups are accepted but up to ten people maximum. Wine can be bought direct.
