This château was once famous for being a slice of Arabian Nights in the middle of the Médoc, but that attraction has now been overtaken by the breathtakingly modern winery. Cos, as it is affectionately known, is a wonderful visit, with renovation works completed in 2009. The eclectic museum, that looks at the colourful history of the estate, is definitely worth a detourand there is a good boutique that stocks a range of ‘lifestyle’ items (due to be moved into the new winery in the next few years). But it is the gleaming stainless steel winery – viewable from behind a glass walkway – that has made Cos such a talking point in recent years. The original architecture is still just as charming – look out for carved wooden panels from Zanzibar, rows of palm trees, and the pagoda roof.
Useful information: Visits and tasting are free, by appointment only. Monday to Friday 09.00-12.00 and 14.00-17.00 including the museum, the winery and the boutique. Groups welcome (maximum 15). It is possible that they will introduce a small fee for the visit, but price has not yet been decided.
