Owned by the Gonet family, winemakers in Champagne since the 19th century, this low profile estate makes some very good wines and has a beautiful classic chartreuse building. Right in the centre of Pessac, Charles-Henri Gonet and his brother Frederic bought the property in 2000 and have since done a full restoration of the château, the winery and the cellars. The vineyard had not produced wine for 70 years before they bought it, and has now produced just two vintages. It covers 6.5ha, with 2.5ha belonging to the city of Bordeaux (they have an agreement with the Pessac town hall to make their ‘official’ wine). The family also has two other properties in Graves de Vayres and Cadaujac – the largest is Château de Lesparre at 280ha. Apparently the philosopher Montesquieu lived at Château Haut Bacalan.
Useful information: Monday to Friday visits with reservation. The phone number above is for Château Lesparre who will make the reservation. Free visit of vineyard and cellars with tasting. Wine available to buy direct.
