Owned by Irishman Lochlann Quinn, this handsome château makes small quantities of an exceptionally good white wine (from 9 hectares), and much greater quantities of a really rather good red wine (from the remaining 37 hectares)! There have been extensive replanting and renovations in recent years. During the tour, look out for the egg-shaped cement vat in the wine cellar. Made of a natural clay, this keeps the lees permanently in suspension, and allows a subtle micro-oxygenation through the clay. The blend for the white has recently upped the percentage of Sauvignon Blanc, and it is since this (with new consultant Hubert de Bouard for the reds) that the plaudits have really begun. Extensive cellar work is due to begin this year, to be finished in 2012, and this will affect visits, so make sure you do call well ahead.
Useful information: Visits €5 for individuals and groups (up to 20, free if buy a bottle). English and German spoken. Tour of vineyards, cellar, plus tasting. Monday to Friday 09.00-12.00, 14.00-18.00, by appointment only (and some weekends possible).
