The charming Olivier Bernard is the man in charge here, at what must be one of Bordeaux’s best loved properties. I don’t know why; maybe it’s the dashingly romantic name (they also own Domaine de la Solitude, another gorgeously poetic title). Or maybe it’s the battle scars earned by struggling against the numerous hail and frost storms this location seems to suffer. Probably it’s just the quality of the wine, that even with these unenviable weather problems, has remained remarkably consistent for years. The château itself is handsome rather than beautiful, with an attractive entrance and a modern winery. If it’s good weather, go out into the beautifully-tended vines, where planting is at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. And a piece of trivia – when you land at Bordeaux airport, and see the vines outside the terminal building, they are looked after by Olivier Bernard.
