Owned by Nicolas de Baillencourt, very much old guard Pomerol in his approach to winemaking (and life), this handsome, large estate makes an excellent visit. Château Gazin covers 24ha (over 3% of the appellation), with plots adjacent to Petrus and L’Evangile. There is 90% Merlot, making both the first wine and an excellent second wine, L’Hospitalet de Gazin, referring to an ancient hospital for pilgrims that was reportedly on this site in the 14th century.
Useful information: Open by appointment Monday - Friday 10.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.30English spoken. Groups to a maximum of 15 people. For a tasting of older vintages, you purchase the bottle, so expect to pay €40-€60.
