A husand-and-wife team of doctors are behind this small Pomerol estate that is receiving ever-greater acclaim both for its wine and its approach to detail in the vineyard. Owned by the lovely Christian and Anne Mairie Dauriac (who recently had their Château Destieux in Saint Emilion promoted to Grand Cru Classé status), there are several reasons for this to make such an interesting visit. Firstly, their new circular cellar is completely covered in wood, with flashes of glass and traditional exposed stone, making a beautiful architectural feature. And secondly, the cap is punched by workers’ feet, so even if you’re not lucky enough to witness this after harvest, make sure to ask about it. Ask to go out into the vineyards, as they are nicely framed by the backdrop of Pomerol village and its church spire. Visits at Château Destieux can also easily be arranged, often in conjunction with a visit here.
Useful information: Free tour and tasting (usually from the barrel) Monday to Friday 09.00-12.00 and14.00-17.00, by appointment. English spoken. Groups welcome up to 40 people, where visits are still free but often the bottles of wine for the tasting must be purchased (ask in advance, because the bottles of wine are stocked in Saint Emilion).
