Managing Director Paul Goldschmidt’s mother is English, and he speaks it perfectly, giving an extra reason to visit this very attractive, classically-styled château in Lalande de Pomerol, covering 68ha, of which 39ha are under vine. The large park has views over the three church spires of Saint Emilion, Néac and Pomerol. The same owners (Paul works with his wife Aline, whose family are the original owners) have Château le Prieuré in Saint Emilion and Château Vray Croix de Gay in Pomerol, and can arrange visits to either of them on weekdays (or tastings of their wines are available here). Siaurac itself is an excellent wine to note down for your cellar, because it really does display many of the silky smooth Pomerol characteristics without the hefty price tag, and a walk around the vinification areas will quickly convince you of the attention to detail – plot by plot vinification, modern cellars, and sustainable agriculture – that ensures quality. Oenologist Yannick Reyrel trained under Jean Claude Berrouet of Château Petrus. The visit lasts one hour in the vineyards, the park and in the cellars, and there is a new wine tourism centre under construction. When the weather is good, you can picnic in their lovely park. Possibility to buy wine direct.

Useful information: Free tour and tasting 09.00-12.30; 14.30-17.00 Monday to Friday by appointment. Weekends possible, but always phone ahead. Groups welcome (no maximum). English spoken.
