Here is your chance to see a small part of the man that helped make Pomerol so famous – step forward, Michel Rolland, for Bon Pasteur is one of his own properties. There are 7ha of Merlot and Cabernet Franc on gravel and clay where Rolland gets to try out his lauded methods in his own back yard. This means, as you would expect, low yields and long hang time for the grapes to ensure perfect maturity, hand harvesting and 100% new oak. The vineyard is just north of Pomerol village, and has a small but expensive-looking château building attached. The offices for The Rolland Collection are now also based at this property. Tasting is offered, and expect the fuller, richer and more explosive style of Pomerol. It’s not always consistent to be honest, and I bet Rolland himself has a few dark moments when he wishes he was located just a little more centrally on the plateau … who knows, you might get lucky and visit while he’s there, then you can ask him yourself.

Useful information: Visits by appointment only from the Rolland Collection (contact details above), Monday to Friday, 9.30-12.30, 14.00-17.00. €10 per person, for visit and tasting (currently of the 2002 vintage) English with advance notice. Tasting is offered, and if you ask in advance, you can also taste other wines from the Rolland Collection, and there is the possibility of buying wines direct from across the range.
