With Pétrus almost on one side and Saint Emilion’s Cheval Blanc on the other, this illustrious estate could hardly ask for a better location. Owned by the Nicolas-Artefeuille family since the late 19th century, it is now the fifth generation who governs the same 12ha of vines as were bought nearly 150 years ago. The building is handsome rather than spectacular but there’s a nice tasting area at the front, with upright barrels and exposed stone walls. The young director, Jean Michel Laporte has introduced plenty of modern techniques, from co-innoculation to micro-oxygenation, and this wine rightly deserves its reputation as one of the most exciting in Pomerol.
