One kilometre from the bell tower in the town centre, this is owned by Herbert de Bouard, the president of the regional INAO (Institut National des Appellations d'Origine) and one of the most progressive Bordeaux owners. A Saint Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé B, the vat rooms and cellars are expectedly impressive, and the perfectly trimmed vines attest to the attention to detail taken in the vineyard. Oh, and a piece of trivia for you to take along to the visit: this is the wine that made an appearance in the James Bond film, Casino Royale.

Useful information: Visit is free, but a tasting costs €11.50 per person. By appointment only, Monday to Friday, call ahead or email to book. Groups welcome (maximum of 15 people). Visits in French, Spanish (but book well ahead) and English. Tours last up to an hour, and you can also buy direct, but expect to pay upwards of €84 for a bottle.
