One of the 17 Bordeaux properties owned by Bernard Magrez, and a highly impressive one to visit. Not only is this historic chartreuse situated on a limestone plateau with sweeping views, it is one of the region’s oldest properties, and wines were first made here during the 14th century, making it one of the region’s oldest estates. The chai and main building have recently been renovated, and there are five chambres d’hôtes rooms that should be open for summer 2008. There are also plans to display some Roman remains that have been found during excavation work at the property. During your visit, be sure to stand at the back of the building and take in the view – Pomerol to your west, Castillon to your east, and all the Saint Emilion satellites on the hills in between.
Useful information: €5 per person for tour and tasting, by appointment Monday to Friday. Tour lasts one hour and, as with all Magrez châteaux, is a lesson in precision winemaking. If you happen to coincide with harvest, you will see hordes of women individually sorting grape by grape. You can see the full range of Magrez wines, but only buy the excellent Fombrauge (prices start at €20 for a bottle). Groups welcome, up to a maximum of 20 people.
