Very attractive estate, with 42ha of vineyards situated east of Côtes de Castillon in St-Foy la Grande. I have included it here because St-Foy appellation has applied to become part of the Côtes, and this is perhaps its leading estate. The winery is equipped with stainless steel thermo-controlled vats and micro-oxygenation equipment for a total capacity of 3,600hl, with an additional cellar of 700 barrels. Owner Yves Picant is a great character, and his top cuvée, Lucullus, retails at around €30, which is expensive for a Saint Foy wine, but it’s really very good, aided in no small part by having Stéphane Derenoncourt as the oenologist.
Useful information: Free tour and tasting by appointment, Monday to Friday. Tours last one hour, in the vineyard, winery and cellar, and are available in English and French. Wine available to buy direct. Groups welcome (up to 30).
