Expect a glamorous, fin-de-siècle feeling at this impressive château, owned by the same family as Château Franc Mayne. Right in the centre of the village of Lussac, the neo-classical property was completely rebuilt in 1875 and has a huge park behind it. Inside it is all dramatic lighting, purple paint and gold-edged chandeliers, but done very tastefully, so you feel you are in Notting Hill, London rather than a tiny village in southwest France. But the cellars are all about the winemaking - stainless steel truncated vats and the ‘Tribaie’ machine for sorting the grapes (this is a very clever machine that weighs the sugar levels in the grapes, to sort out the ones with the best density that are therefore the most ripe and will make the best wine). A female winemaker, Laurence Ters, works across both properties, and has created an indulgent, smooth Merlot-led wine.

Useful information: Open 09.00-12.00 and 14.00-18.00 Monday-Friday. Weekends by appointment throughout the year. €7 per person, with tasting of two wines. Tours in English, German, Spanish (in summer) and Italian.
