Château Giscours

Gorgeous large grounds that used to hold polo matches, the Dutch owners, Eric and Louise Albada Jelgersma, have done a wonderful job of restoring the château since they took over in 1996 – right from the smart cobbled entrance and huge wrought iron gates that you cannot miss as you drive up the D2. It’s a large estate, over 85ha, with vines planted at a high density of up to 10,000 vines per hectare. During the vineyard tour, look out for the small touches like the relevage system – adjustable training wires that move higher during the growing season to ensure maximum leaf exposure to sunlight. Tours include a walk around the vineyard and grounds, as well as the cellars and vinification areas, followed by a tasting. There is also a shop that sells not only the estate’s wine, but (mainly aimed at their corporate guests) glasses, decanters, umbrellas and a small selection of clothing (best of all, considering the history, are the embroidered polo shirts). There are also three small, but very charming bedrooms to stay in.

Useful information: Visits from 10.00-16.00 Monday to Saturday year round, by appointment, and on Sundays also during the summer months, again by appointment, Individuals €6 (including tasting of the Grand Vin: Château Giscours), €7 for groups from seven people (tasting of two wines: Giscours plus Château Du Thil). Groups welcome, and all tours are available in French, English, German and Dutch.
