The smart iron railings that encircle La Lagune mark out the real start of the southern Médoc vineyards (in fact, by the time you reach this, you practically let out of whoop of joy that you’re out of mindless suburbia and into somewhere scenic). Of particular interest is the all-new winery, completed in 2004 and pure stainless steel. Look out for the tiny lifts that take the grapes up to the sorting tables after harvest – this gets the grapes to the highest point of the winery, and they are moved into the tanks by gravity for fermentation. Today it is run by the very charming Caroline Frey (continuing, as it happens, the tradition of female directors here, as this was the first Bordeaux estate to ever put a woman in charge: Jeanne Boyrie back in 1964). The chartreuse building is also available for hire, with bedrooms for short stays (not cheap, but they come with their own butler!) or reception rooms for meetings.
Useful information: Monday to Friday 09.00-12.00, 14.00-17.00 (Friday mornings only). €7 for 45 minute tour, including tasting of two wines – currently the Grand Vin, and an older vintage of their second wine. Appointment necessary. English and French, groups welcome.
