Very much geared up towards receiving visitors, Palmoumey is just off the main D2 road, but well rewards any visitor that makes the left-hand turn (it really is like this; châteaux that aren’t directly on the Route des Châteaux get about 40% fewer visitors!). There’s a good shop selling not only their wines, but books, jewellery and wine-related gifts, and some food available also. Painting and sculpture exhibitions are organised throughout the year. Also a member of les Medocaines (www.lesmedocaines.com).
Useful information: Open from 10.00-18.00 Monday to Friday, weekends by appointment. Tastings include an overview of grapes, vintages and appellations, or a workshop on wine aromas and grape variety blending. €6 for visit and tasting (2 wines, plus Sarments du Médoc chocolates), and an engraved glass is offered at the end of the visit. Blending workshop (minimum 8 people) €15. Harvest workshop plus lunch €30.
