This well-known 7ha domaine has a shop, tasting room and restaurant right in the centre of Aloxe-Corton, offering tastings and bottles for sale, as well as meals with wines to match for a reasonable price. They can arrange private shipments of wines to the USA. The wines are made by Philippe Senard and his daughter, Lorraine, and cover the spectrum from the lighter end ‘en Charlemagne’ (both red and white) to the grandest of Grands Crus – Corton Bressandes and Clos du Roi – which are bigger, rich and more concentrated. Cortons are the relative bargain Grands Crus selling for half the price of their Côte de Nuits cousins. Look out for their interesting white Aloxe Corton, which rather than from Chardonnay, is made from 100% Pinot Gris, the only one in the Aloxe Corton appellation. The estate’s origins date from 1865.
Useful information: Open for purchases, tastings and meals Tuesday – Saturday 10.00-18.00. There is a fee of €10 made for tasting refunded on purchase. Meals: €40-€60 depending on number of wines tasted. More details of menus and wines for tasting are on www.table-comte-senard.com. Closed from 25 December – 1 February.
