Stéphane and Richard Martin are leading growers in Davayé, the preeminent village for the impressive whites of St-Véran, la Croix Senaillet nudging fine Pouilly Fuissé in quality but at a considerable saving on price. Of their three St Vérans, La Grande Bruyère is powerful and spicy, Les Buis all minerals and racy crispness; les Rochats silky and most expressive. They also produce an exemplary Pouilly Fuissé, oak, fruit and vinosity in fine balance. The complexity of these wines is down to the size and varied sites of the estate – some 24ha across 150 parcels of vines. Their vineyards are currently in conversion to organic/biodynamic methods.
