Bought and restored in 1999 by Dominique Lafon, of the distinguished Côte de Beaune domaine, this is a model new-wave estate in the village of the Mâconnais' most famous son, Alphonse de Lamartine. Biodynamic cultivation and hand-made methods, including fermentations in barriques and larger oak foudres, result in complex mouthfilling white burgundies for reasonable cost. The Clos du Four, especially the 2005, is the best wine though their other vineyard farther north in Mâcon-Uchizy yields fine flowery wines too. The attractive village of Milly-Lamartine is also renowned as the village where the poet Alphonse de Lamartine spent his childhood with his sisters in the family country seat. The Maison d'Enfance de Lamartine is a delightful manor house within a walled garden classified as a private museum. It is open for guided visits in summer on Sundays (telephone 03 85 37 70 33).
