Christophe Constant is the oenologist and winemaker for Mesnil grower, Jean-Louis Vergnon, who is in semi-retirement. Scuba diver and wine wizard, Christophe was not born with a silver tastevin in his mouth. His father is the owner of Epernay's best and least pretentious café, le Khedive, a great place for a quick hot lunch. Christophe was a bright student at the wine faculty in Reims, then worked for Pol Roger before coming to manage the 5ha Vergnon domaine. A rising star, Christophe's Champagnes show a wonderful balance of taut dryness, great purity and subtle richness. A Chardonnay specialist, his two best wines are the Cuvée Confidence 2003, a Champagne of zero dosage that still manages to be rich and quietly friendly, and the superb 2002 vintage with its scent of acacia blossom and flavours of orchard pears and peach. A true classic.
