A magnificent 17th century 'Relais & Château' hotel 37km west of Reims, Château de Courcelles is the ideal stopover for those who wish to take a leisurely drive through the champenois vineyards to Reims the following day. Built in Louis XIV style with a staircase designed by Cocteau, this grand house is surrounded by 20ha of beautiful parkland. There are 18 rooms and suites, and if you want the best, ask for the one over the stables - nearly all have a view over the park. Château de Courcelles has built up a reputation for its food through several good chefs with Thibaut Serin-Moulin at the stoves since 2005. The restaurant has one Michelin star, and is well worth a try.
Useful information: Rooms: €185-€360; suites: €360-€455; breakfast: €21; menus: €45 - €185.
