In this wealthy capital city of Champagne, it’s difficult to find a central hotel of character that is modestly priced yet has charm and a great location. Martine and Claude Mentaux’s little 17-room hotel ticks these boxes – and their welcome is very warm and natural. The bedrooms on several floors are reached up a spiral staircase (there’s no lift) but housekeeping is immaculate and all have private facilities with Wi-Fi and multi-channel televisions. Note that the cheapest compact rooms are suitable only for the solitary traveller. More spacious double rooms are traditionally furnished and most offer a sidelong view of the Cathedral. Decent continental breakfasts. A good stopover for those on a budget.
Useful information: Rooms: €59-€70; breakfast: €7.50.
