Take a look at the hotchpotch of towers, spires and domes and just try to work out which five stately homes in England and Scotland the design of Maison Pommery was stitched together from in 1878. The cellars are the deepest in Champagne, with the most amazing steps going down. There are no less than 120 massive Gallo-Roman crayères connected by 19km of tunnels. Ask to see the cuverie for contrast. This stainless-steel city is no longer the newest in Champagne, but it remains one of the most impressive and this is one of the few great Houses in Reims that is possible to visit almost every day of the year.
Useful information: No appointment necessary, though for an English tour it's advisable. Tasting available and tours from €12 per person. Open every day 10.00-18.00 (beginning of April to mid-November 09.30-19.00); closed on 25 December and 1 January. You can arrange special visits with meals in a private room for 10 people upwards.
