Like his father before him, Jean-Laurent Bernardi is president of the local Syndicat des Vins de Patrimonio that is responsible for regulating and promoting the Patrimonio appellation. Patrimonio vineyards, with spectacular views of the sea and mountains and which are located less than 10km from one of Corsica’s most desired tourist destinations, St-Florent, are under intense development pressure. Vacation developments have begun to eat away at the appellation’s 425ha, and the Syndicat has now initiated two projects to protect its vineyards: designation of Patrimonio by the French state as a natural site of cultural importance and the construction of a Maison des Vins to serve as a tourism centre for the over 40,000 visitors who come to Patrimonio annually. In addition to ensuring Patrimonio’s reputation as the number one appellation in Corsica, Bernardi, along with his brother Jean-Paul, continue the winemaking tradition that was begun by their grandfather in 1880 and whose wines won awards in Paris and London as early as 1900. As its name signifies, the Clos de Bernardi is completely enclosed by a stone wall (clos means ’shut’ or ’closed’ in French). Their vineyards benefit from a microclimate of favourable exposure to the sun and frequent maritime breezes that cool and sanitize the vines. They make big, juicy reds and exceptional Muscats.
