Domaine Gentile dates from 1970 when Dominique and Viviane Gentile, the son and daughter of Corsican winemakers, decided to create a vineyard that would express the ‘typicity’ or unique taste, of Corsican grape varieties. Nieulluciu, Vermentinu and Muscat à Petits Grains are planted on 30ha of clay-limestone slopes. In 1988, they built a large underground cellar for ageing both bottles and barrels, a rarity on the island, as the vast majority of winemakers sell most of their wine during the first summer tourism season that follows its bottling. Jean-Paul Gentile, their son, joined them in 1994 after studies at the Sorbonne and a stint in the military. Contrary to most Corsican winemakers, who are not the world’s greatest communicators, the younger Gentile is quite talkative, especially about Corsican history. He can share a long list of esoteric Corsican tales about efforts to link Corsicans to Sumerian elites (something about skull types), maps purporting to show that the city state of Atlantis was located on the strait between Corsica and Sardinia, and even websites claiming that the Lost Tribes of Israel somehow ended up on Corsica and Sardinia. If your French is good enough, you’ll certainly enjoy discussing these theories with the younger Gentile while tasting the domaine’s wines.
