Henry Orenga de Gaffory is pretty much what passes for high society in Corsica. His father, Jean-Pierre Orenga de Gaffory, was the grandson of the creator of one of France’s most famous aperitifs, Cap Corse Mattei, made from a base of red wine (actually unfermented grape must), plant extracts, macerated oranges, and some quinine to add a bitter sweet taste. This concoction is aged in oak barrels. When the Cap Corse Mattei brand and production facilities were sold in the 1960s, Jean-Pierre Orenga de Gaffory purchased a vineyard in what would later become the Patrimonio appellation. His son Henry joined him in 1974, and together they have grown their Patrimonio holdings from their original 20ha of vines to almost 85ha (this includes the 35-ha Clos San Quilico, which was purchased in 1994). Over 20 wines are available for tasting in a setting that is more Napa Valley than Corsica. In a nod to the younger Orenga de Gaffory’s passion for contemporary art, the tasting room is part of an art exhibition space where three or four art exhibits are held annually.
Useful information: The Tasting Room is open April - September 09.00–19.30 (at weekends from 10.00). From October – April, it’s open Monday – Friday, 09.00–18.00 and on Saturdays, 10.00–18.00. English spoken.
