The Cap Corse, the northward-pointing spur that extends Corsica an additional 40km, is a land of sailors, merchants and winemakers. The Pieretti family has been making wine here for five generations. Lina Pieretti-Venturi took over from her father in 1989, following a devastating fire that destroyed much of the vineyard. She restructured the 10ha-vineyard, building a modern wine cellar right on the beach and has mastered the art of respecting tradition while embracing modern techniques that improve the quality of her wines. There’s a new winery going up across the road from her present location. Several parcels of her vines almost have their roots in the sea, and, on a clear day you can see the Island of Elba where Napoleon was exiled in 1814. She makes an excellent Vermentinu that is fresh, well-structured and distinguished by its minerality. These attributes are undoubtedly because of the proximity of the Mediterranean and the clay and schist soil found here. Her Muscat du Cap Corse has a fine bouquet of exotic fruit, a wonderful, deep-golden colour, and a fresh, well-balanced taste. She also grows Alicante, another traditional Cap Corse variety with some Grenache characteristics, using it to make a deliciously savage red wine named A Murteta.
