In 1999, at the age of just 26, Laetitia Tola, owner of the AC Ajaccio vineyard Le Clos Ornasca, took over the 10ha vineyard that her father had started four years earlier. It’s now just Tola, her partner, former goat herder Jean-Antoine Manenti, and one full-time employee who helps out with vineyard work. The Clos Ornasca’s two best wines - the red Cuvée Stella, a blend of Sciaccarellu and Niellucciu that is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, and the white Cuvée Lesia, a 100% Vermentinu that is vinified in oak barrels - were named for Tola and Manenti’s two daughters. Like the couple, these two wines are honest and unpretentious, and they represent excellent value for money. There’s also a nicely rounded, fruity and well-balanced rosé that is made from the native Sciaccarellu grape. They sell 90% of their production on the island - and half of that is sold directly from the cellar, so a visit there may be your only way to get a taste of Clos Ornasca wine.
