Yves Canarelli is probably Corsica’s most sought-after winemaker at the moment, making two stellar white wines - a 100% Vermentinu and a 100% Biancu Gentile. The Biancu Gentile is sold as a simple Vin de Table, but this is only because the variety is not permitted in the AC Corse-Figari appellation. A pale, lemony yellow colour, with a rich, smooth, silky texture, this is one white that improves with age. Its flavours include caramelized pear and white peaches. The Vermentinu is equally good, particularly after five or six years of ageing. A blend of old-vine Syrah and Niellucciu is in his flagship Clos red wine, which is an intense ruby red, crystal clear in clarity. There are aromas of blackberries and other black fruits, complemented with the distinct perfume of the maquis scrubland, and it offers beguiling hints of Sangiovese-like silky texture and finesse. The reds are not yet at the level of the whites made here, but Canarelli is working hard to improve them. Decomposed granite soil, meticulous biodynamic farming, low yields, indigenous yeast, and a world-class cellar and winemaker make the Clos Canarelli a necessary stop on any wine tour of Southern Corsica.
