Bernard Badoz has an important role in the Jura wine region, as it was he who founded the Percée du Vin Jaune festival (see 'Events'). Back in the 1970s he developed his business in old Poligny, farming 4ha of vines and buying in wines and grapes from others too. His philosophy was always to make more Vins Jaune and Vins de Paille than most people, believing these were what made Jura unique. Gradually, with his son Benoit coming into the business he built up the vineyards to 10ha, all on one slope in Poligny. Technically retired, but still keeping a tasting room open near the church in the centre of town, Bernard has handed the reins over to Benoit, and his estate is in very good hands. After studies in Beaune, Benoit did stints at Pétrus among other places and this gave him some excellent introductions to work in both California and Australia. He learnt attention to detail here, and this shows in the excellent wine range that is also very good value. You will often find Benoit's wife Virginie in their welcoming tasting room on the edge of town.
Useful information: The tasting room at this address and at 15 Rue du Collège are open Monday-Saturday. Groups accepted by appointment (up to 40 people) with a small charge.
