Jean-Michel Arnaud, a former cooperative grower who went independent in 1998, coaxes impressive complex reds out of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan in his compact little winery (two or three visitors at once maximum!). His Minervois La Livinière top wine is a pretty classic example of this appellation from one vintage to the next, showing solid weight/tannins and smoky yet ‘sweet’ fruit. And he's now succumbed to demand, or fashion perhaps, by making a lively dry rosé.
Useful information: Telephone in advance as he's often out in the vineyards; he also sometimes puts on summer barbeques with other growers out in the vineyards and takes part in two annual events, one in spring called Printemps du Minervois (see website) and the other in autumn, les Grands Chemins (see 'Events').
