The impressive country château is the first thing that hits you coming down the gravelly drive - it is indeed made from rock (although it´s actually named after the eponymous 13th century noble family). Old rock too: the tasting cellar vault forms part of a restored medieval post-house. A long-standing ambassador for Pic Saint Loup, their specialities include a sensationally unusual old-vine Mourvèdre, more classic-style Syrah-based Cupa Numismae and Clos des Bénédictins barrel fermented white, made from Rolle, Roussanne and Marsanne. Taken over by Jacques and Marion Figuette in 2006, who wisely seem happy not to make any major changes to the range and have kept prices reasonable, for such a sought-after estate. Having said that, the winery underwent a partial refit in 2008 and La Roque is aiming for organic certification from vintage 2010.
