Domaine de Nicole, one of four Mas family properties, has been refitted to house a tasting/reception area and shop with an enlarged 'wine tourism site', including a restaurant, due to open early in 2011. Jean-Claude Mas is a Languedoc modernist with bullish attitude, whose range takes in irreverent labels like Arrogant Frog (the wine’s good too) and some excellent varietal Vins de Pays such as La Forge Merlot, Chardonnay (the best of it sourced from their winery in Limoux) or Viognier. However, Jean-Claude and his brother Michel are very serious about perfecting their ‘traditional’ Coteaux du Languedoc reds such as the age-worthy Château Paul Mas, Les Faïsses and new Mas des Mas ‘terroir’ range launched with the impressive 2006 vintage. Other developments include organic wines sourced from their latest purchase, Les Tannes in Montagnac, bringing the total of owned vineyards to 170ha and a further 700ha where they work closely with contracted growers. Guess which country is one of their main export markets? Australia!
