Arguably the most famous name in the Maury area (with matching celebrity prices too), Mas Amiel has been owned by Bordeaux entrepreneur Olivier Decelle since 1999. He has obviously ploughed in substantial funds to overhaul and replant the vineyards and build a smart tasting room/shop on-site. Amiel is a vast and beautiful estate spanning across 190ha of vines, 155 of them currently in production, split up into "90 parcels," as it states on their website. On paper, this figure sounds a little difficult to grasp but, if you get the chance to drive around some of the many tracks here, there and everywhere (4x4 only!) then you will see what they mean. The terrain is very varied with its undulating slopes and varying exposure, peaks and troughs and colourful variety of black schist and other soils. Winemaking and vineyards come under the watchful eye of on-site boss Nicolas Raffy. Amiel still has stocks of some sensational old vintage Maurys going back to the 1960s; and favourites from their regular wine range include Notre Terre red, Côtes du Roussillon Villages.
