Clos de Paulilles

Signposted off the main road between Port-Vendres and Banyuls-sur-Mer, Paulilles is owned by the Dauré family of Château de Jau (both wine producer and restaurant) in the northern Roussillon and Viña las Niñas in Chile. The winery and restaurant sit on a beautiful cove almost touching the sea. The 80ha domaine is the largest in the area and the vineyards are mostly around the winery, which is unusual for the fragmented Collioure/Banyuls vineyard patchwork. La Ferme Auberge du Clos de Paulilles, the seasonal on-site stone-patio restaurant, is in delightful surroundings alongside vineyard and sea. Offering a similar formula to their Château de Jau restaurant, the five-course menu matches a tasting of different Collioure or Banyuls wines served with each course (sensible 7.5cl measure). Their chunky Collioure rosé is legendary and the smoky red unusually is made up of around two-thirds Mourvèdre. In addition, try the lovely Vintage or Rimage Banyuls and more tawny-styled Cap Béar.

Useful information: Five-course menu with wines and coffee €39. Open every weekend in May then from the beginning of June to late September for dinner and Sunday lunch. Reservation recommended. There’s now also a holiday apartment on-site – see website. Wine shop open from the end March to end October. Wine estate Domaine de Valcros next door has three rooms in its chambres d’hôtes housed in a big old stone farmhouse. Rooms: €69-€85 including breakfast. Tel: 04 68 82 04 27
