One of the real references of Anjou, this family estate is run by Claude and Joëlle Papin, who have recently been joined by their sons René and Christophe. Claude is a great expert on geology and their wines are inspired by the differences in terroir in their vineyards. This part of the Layon, on the boundary of the Paris basin and the Brittany peninsula, is very complex geologically. The Papins make wines from the western end of the Layon from their powerful Anjou Blanc Haut de la Garde to a lovely range of Layons including L’Anclaie and Quarts de Chaume as well as two Anjou Villages – Sur Schiste and Sur Spilite. The rich and concentrated Anjou Gamay shows what can be achieved with this frequently abused variety when yields are substantially reduced. The Papins also have vines in Savennières including a parcel in La Roche aux Moines.
