Louis Métaireau was one of the great characters of Pays Nantais. Louis refused to accept poor quality Muscadet and with his producer's group Vignerons d’Art, would eliminate any wines that did not come up to scratch. I well remember on my first visit back in February 1989 Louis' delight in explaining how his growers often eliminated their own wines in these blind tastings. Louis has now retired to Corsica. His daughter Marie-Luce Métaireau and her husband Jean-François Guilbaud carry on his work. The 23ha Grand Mouton vineyard is the centre of the domaine and from here come the cuvées Grand Mouton, Petit Mouton – the second wine – as well as the rarer wines such as One and Premier Jour that are only made in exceptional vintages. Other cuvées come from vineyards in other communes: MLM (Marie-Luce Métaireau), for instance, comes from vines in la Haye-Fouassière. The Métaireau wines are not cheap but they are amongst the best Muscadet you can find and are worth their price.
