The generally rather unprepossessing town of Issoudun does have the merit of being conveniently close to Reuilly and Quincy, and this excellent restaurant, which dates from around 1820 certainly merits a considerable detour. There are several comfortable dining rooms and the whole restaurant has a charming period feel with drawings of Balzac on the walls and prints by Bernard Buffet. At €31 the four course Menu du Marché offers remarkable value. Very good wine list both for the Loire, but also Bordeaux and Burgundy including old vintages back to 1908. House wine is Claude Lafond’s Reuilly. No need to go anywhere afterwards because there are 11 air-conditioned rooms around the corner here in the hotel (26 Rue des Minimes), each one is individually decorated and named after a famous person. Some rooms have access to their own private gardens.
Useful information: Menus: €25-€91. Rooms: €85-€130; breakfast €15. Wi-Fi available.
