There is no question that this is my favourite restaurant in the Sancerre – Pouilly area. Chef Jean-Marc Bourgeois is in the kitchen, while Karine, his wife, looks after the small but charming dining room. Jean-Marc’s speciality tagliatelle de crottin au beurre de Muscade, which is made from fresh goats’ cheese with a nutmeg butter, is a sensational first course. Other memorable dishes include risotto with oysters and crab in a cool light creamy white bean sauce. Best list of wines from Chavignol I know, as well as a good selection of other wines from Sancerre and from Pouilly. There are often old vintages from Cotat on the list – well worth trying. There are only around 30 covers, so booking recommended. In the same building is a casual bistro, which is open every day. Following nearly a year’s construction work Jean-Marc and Karine Bourgeois opened their new luxury hotel behind the restaurant in summer 2008. There is a range of 12 attractive rooms, which are well appointed and comfortable, with free Wi-Fi. This is now definitely the best hotel in the area.
Useful information: Menus: €32.50-€56. Closed: Sunday night, Monday except in the summer, Tuesday night and all day Wednesday. Bistrot open daily with menus at €11.90 lunch and €17.90 dinner. Rooms €95-€170.
