Taking over the family vineyards in 1989, François Chidaine has transformed both their size and reputation. In 1989 there were just five hectares. Now there are 20ha in Montlouis and 10ha in Vouvray – in 2002 he bought, with his partners Manuela (his wife) and Nicolas Martin, the vineyards of Philippe Poniatowski including the famous but neglected Clos Baudoin. More recently they have acquired a small parcel (1.5ha) of vines in the Cher Valley at Chissay. Since 1999 the vineyards have been run biodynamically. François is particularly interested in dry Chenin and his wines have a lovely minerality. The various bottlings include Les Choisilles, Les Tuffeaux, Clos Habert (single vineyard with old vines) and Le Lys (usually sweet) in Montlouis; and Clos Baudoin (dry), Les Argiles and Le Bouchet in Vouvray. Note that this address is for their shop (see also 'Wine Shops').
