In an amphitheatre amongst the hills of Bandol, facing southeast towards the sea, Mourvèdre ripens beautifully (it is a difficult grape). The highest vines are at 300m and benefit from cooling sea breezes. The white varieties are planted on chalky outcrops facing north for greater acidity. The estate was founded in 1977 by Henri Saint-Victor, a Parisian lawyer, and his wines now have reached a solid and enviable reputation. His son Eric has now taken over the helm. His stint in Bordeaux brings wider experience, and the discovery of marnes bleu - the famed soil of Château Pétrus - in the vineyards, further confirms the excellence of the site and its wines. The wines are classic Bandol at its best, in all three colours. Don’t be put off by the very long, sinuous narrow road leading to the domaine – it is worth finding, and is a stunning site with views over the hilltops to the Mediterranean.
