What most impressed me when first tasting these wines was the almost limitless enthusiasm of the winemaker Olivier de Boisgelin. With almost Burgundian style whites, fruity rosés with floral notes and big reds showing supple, tannins which are showing great staying power – these are certainly wines to look out for. Olivier only joined the estate in 2000 so the oldest wines tasted were from his first vintage – with each year the range of mature wines will grow. It comes as no surprise that Fontlade and Château de Pourcieux share the same winemaking consultant and that Olivier de Boisgelin and Michel d’Espagnet of Pourcieux have become firm friends sharing a passion for Provencal red wines which are full bodied in youth and yet which mature well. Although there is a signpost on the N7, it is safer to turn in to the estate from the Route de Cabasse.
